A writing confidence intervention for reluctant and anxious writers
Designed for SEND and mixed-ability classrooms, Writing Champions supports pupils who struggle to get ideas onto the page or lose confidence when writing feels over-corrected too early.
The intervention is teacher-led, low pressure, and structured to unlock voice first — so confidence and technical accuracy can follow.
About Us
Writing Champions also supports confident and enthusiastic writers, and works with families who want to nurture a love of writing beyond the classroom.
Schools typically engage Writing Champions as a writing confidence intervention, while families access our courses and resources independently.
Why Writing Champions works
Writing Champions was developed in response to a common classroom challenge: pupils who have ideas but struggle to get them onto the page — often losing confidence when writing is corrected too early.
Our approach prioritises voice before accuracy, giving children permission to write freely first, so confidence, fluency and technical skill can develop in the right order.
The intervention is:
• structured and repeatable
• grounded in classroom practice
• accessible for SEND and mixed-ability groups
• designed to reduce pressure on both pupils and teachers
Writing Champions can be used as a focused writing confidence intervention, while also supporting pupils who enjoy writing and want to develop their creativity further.

A low-risk pilot for schools
Schools can trial Writing Champions through a short, structured pilot designed for reluctant and anxious writers in Years 3–6.
The pilot:
• runs for 6 weeks
• is teacher- or TA-led
• requires minimal preparation
• works well for SEND and mixed-ability groups
• fits alongside existing literacy provision
There is no obligation to continue beyond the pilot.
Schools use the pilot to reduce writing avoidance, increase stamina, and help pupils transfer ideas more confidently into written work.
How the Writing Champions Intervention works
Writing Champions is built around a simple but powerful principle: confidence comes before correctness.
Many reluctant writers struggle not because they lack ideas, but because writing feels high-pressure too early. Our intervention creates the conditions for pupils to write freely first, so structure, accuracy and stamina can develop in the right order.
The Writing Confidence Intervention:
• runs over 6 weeks
• is teacher- or TA-led
• requires minimal preparation
• works well for SEND and mixed-ability groups
Sessions use humour, imaginative prompts and clear scaffolding to help pupils:
• generate ideas more easily
• write for longer without freezing
• develop confidence in their own voice
• re-engage with classroom writing
Schools typically use the intervention as a focused SEND or inclusion support, or as a bridge back into whole-class writing.
Families also use Writing Champions resources independently to support writing confidence at home.

Damisi is a writer and poet and has published several pieces of poetry and short stories in literary magazines.
After completing the writing for children's course at Faber & Faber in 2015, Damisi decided to start Writing Champions. In designing the syllabus, she brought her creative writing expertise, consulted with English teachers and also drew on her own personal experience of trying to encourage her daughter, who was a reluctant writer, to enjoy writing for pleasure. In her spare time, when she is not busy chasing after her children, she loves to travel and can often be found hiding somewhere with a book.
Damisi was a winner of the London Writers Award, 2025 (Children and YA Category).
